Idan Raichel

image 2

Idan is a singer-songwriter and musician from Israel. His music is truly inspiring and up lifting. His style has been classified as ‘pop-folk-world’ music but it so much more. He has a Middle Eastern vibe but also draws strongly from Latin American and African music.

He served in the Israel Defense Forces after which he became a counselor at a boarding school for immigrants. It held a majority of Ethiopian-Jews who the introduced to him to Ethiopian Folk. He then traveled with ‘Save A Child’s Heart’ to to Ethiopia.

The Idan Raichel Project is his first and best received album containing songs like Hinach Yafah(Thou Art Beautiful), Mi Maanakim(Out of the Depth), Bo ee(Come With Me) and Im Telech(If You Go).

His attraction to long hair, gypsy music and the tango is what drove him to study jazz piano at school. And there began the start of the Idan Raichel I have come to admire.

Powerful Native American Symbols

Human kind must first find their place within nature in order to live at peace. All creatures and plants are considered to be equal, each fitting into the system of life according to their individual characteristics and abilities. Animals and their totems represent a persons spirit guide, a helper in physical form.

The Eagle: the divine spirit and the protector of all things. When seen in the sky it was a sign of justice to be done. Strange how America has adopted the eagle, from the Native American belief, as a national symbol when they took the land from its people.

The Horse: Power, message carrier. Ability to communicate with other realms.

The Wolf: the spirit, ultimate sign of loyalty because wolves mate for life. They have a strong sense of family.

The Buffalo: gratitude, they are considered a great gift. They provide the natives with everything; cloths, shelter, food and tools. For them it is the ultimate sign of life. A manifestation of the Great Spirit, knowledge, generosity, abundance.

The Whale: ancient knowledge and awareness.

The Owl: insight and wisdom. The ability to see things clearly.

The Bear: strength and leadership, associated with their greatest warriors. Each clan would have selected two or more males as the bears in the tribe. They were the fittest and strongest and when battle came, they would be the first to charge the enemy with nothing but their bare hands.

The Deer: Compassion and healing.

The Puma: Grace and Beauty.

The Raccoon: Curiousity

The Snake: Rebirth/ Transformation

The Spider: success through hard work and perseverance. Weaving the web of fate.

Soliloquy of the Solipsist

I
I walk alone;
The midnight street
Spins itself from under my feet;
When my eyes shut
These dreaming houses all snuff out;
Through a whim of mine
Over gables the moon’s celestial onion
Hangs high.

I
Make houses shrink
And trees diminish
By going far; my look’s leash
Dangles the puppet-people
Who, unaware how they dwindle,
Laugh, kiss, get drunk,
Nor guess that if I choose to blink
They die.

I
When in good humor,
Give grass its green
Blazon sky blue, and endow the sun
With gold;
Yet, in my wintriest moods, I hold
Absolute power
To boycott any color and forbid any flower
To be.

I
Know you appear
Vivid at my side,
Denying you sprang out of my head,
Claiming you feel
Love fiery enough to prove flesh real,
Though it’s quite clear
All you beauty, all your wit, is a gift, my dear,
From me.

 -Sylvia Plath

To A Jilted Lover

Cold on my narrow cot I lie
and in sorrow look
through my window-square of black:

figured in the midnight sky,
a mosaic of stars
diagrams the falling years,

while from the moon, my lover’s eye
chills me to death
with radiance of his frozen faith.

Once I wounded him with so
small a thorn
I never thought his flesh would burn

or that the heat within would grow
until he stood
incandescent as a god;

now there is nowhere I can go
to hide from him:
moon and sun reflect his flame.

In the morning all shall be
the same again:
stars pale before the angry dawn;

the gilded cock will turn for me
the rack of time
until the peak of noon has come

and by that glare, my love will see
how I am still
blazing in my golden hell.

-Sylvia Plath

Shantaram. This book is phenomenal. It awakens inside you something new, someone new. It is a real eye opener in seeing the world for its beauty as well as its horror. The secret ingredient is the fact that it is a true story, told out of the view point of the author and main character himself. His experiences are both heart breaking and heart warming at times. I find myself reading it again and again.

Med fødderne i gløderne

I listen to this song at least once a day. It is a Danish song by Jonas Suni. When listening to this song I feel like I’m floating on my back in a grey ocean. The gentle rise and fall of waves pulsating in synchrony with the beat. Try it: Med fødderne i gløderne

He is also part of a group called SPECS&SUNI who released a single, Mit Aarhus.

Here are the Lyrics for Med fødderne i gløderne  if you want to translate them:

Hvad er livet?
En dans på roser
Med begge ben på jorden
Forstås baglæns
Leves forfra?
En forpost
Til himmelen
Til helvede
Med stil
At leve er at rejse
Mod helvede
Med smil

Mening serveret
Med rød anarki
Med fødderne i gløderne
Det min melodi
Hvad kommer du efter?
Hvad tænker du på?
Lykken at søge
Ulykken at nå

At finde sin kerne
I konstant bevægelse
På ben som børns
Vil jeg fange det ind
Men vakelende ben
Går ikke så stærkt
En rolig hånd
Og et rystende hjerte
Det mit rystende hjerte

Reasons You’re Not Loosing Weight

You Overcompensate For Exercise.

Often people comfort/reward themselves with food after exercise. And more than often they eat more that they burnt during exercise.

You’re Not Getting Enough Sleep

Too little sleep slows down the metabolism, effects exercise performance (because of the lack of energy) and increases the appetite. It can also increase stress levels and add to weight gain.

Drinking To Much Sugary Drinks

Stick to fresh juices and water. Even when drinking fresh juices, keep an eye on the quantity. If you used 5 apples, and 4 oranges for example, make sure that you can eat that same amount without using the juicer. So make a selection of fruits and veggies you can eat in one portion and juice it. Do not use more.

You’re Eating Large Portions

Eating too much of anything causes weight gain. Try keeping to fist size portions. If you find you are still hungry, wait 1-2 hours before eating another portion or having a snack.

You’re Eating Too Little

Your body has a natural instinct to protect itself so when you eat too little it automatically goes into starvation mode, causing your metabolism to slow down drastically and your body to hoard fats & calories.

Mental Health

Express Emotions

You need to find an outlet for your emotions even if it is in a diary, the confession booth or with a boxing bag. A friend, a family member or even a shrink is a preferred option but people are different and some are not comfortable with sharing their feelings with others.

Eat Well

It’s the circle of life. What we put inside our bodies physically shows on the outside and determine how we feel about ourselves. So be careful of what you eat because how we feel about ourselves and how we see ourselves, is the most important thing of all.

Keep in Touch

Keeping in touch with different people, people who think and do things differently as to how you do, is what pulls you out of your comfort zone sometimes to make you experience things you would not have experienced otherwise. Stepping out of your comfort zone, experiencing new things, is what makes you grow as a person.

‘ME’ Time

Take a break and spend time on yourself, just you. Working on yourself is very rewarding. It is difficult to find the balance in life but even more so to find it within yourself. You cannot expect someone to love and accept you fully if you do not love and accept yourself.

Keep Active

Not only does exercise produce the “happy hormone” (endorphins) but it results in a better physical body which in turn boosts your self esteem. You will love yourself more.

Substance abuse

Stay as far away as possible. Any substance gives you a temporary boost and then when the effects wear off you fall down further then before. I’m not saying a glass of wine or two with a meal or a cold beer after a long day is a bad idea. I’m just saying that moderation is the key.

Do Something You’re Good At.

By doing something you are good at you concentrate on you strong points and boost yourself up. So use your time and energy on something that brings you positive feed back.

Care for Others

By caring for others and helping where your help is needed, you efforts will be appreciated and their appreciation will make you feel good about yourself.
